  • goku Son Goku (孫 悟空, Son Gokū), born Kakarot (カカロット, Kakarotto), is a male Saiyan and the main protagonist of the Dragon Ball metaseries created by Akira Toriyama. He is the adoptive grandson of Grandpa Gohan, the son of Bardock and Gine, the younger brother of Raditz, the husband of Chi-Chi, the father of Gohan and Goten, the grandfather of Pan, and later the ancestor of Goku Jr. Cheerful, tenacious and also a bit naive, Goku is a Saiyan originally sent to Earth as an infant with the mission to destroy it. However, an accident alters his memory, causing him to grow up pure-hearted and later become Earth's greatest defender, as well as the informal leader of the Dragon Team. Throughout his life, he trains hard and constantly strives to be the greatest warrior possible and to fight stronger opponents, which has kept the Earth and the Universe as a whole safe from destruction many times.[13]

In the beginning of the series, as a 12 year old, Goku is rather short, and his appearance can actually trick his age, with some considering him to be much less than 10 years old, and get rather surprised when they hear his actual age. During the next few years, Goku did not present many physical changes, other than his muscles becoming more pronounced. It wasn't until his first growth spurt between the age of 15 that he became almost indistinguishable from before, and was only recognized by his naive personality and "trademark" hairstyle. He had grown quite taller than most of his friends, with a well-built physique, with Bulma even calling him "handsome". Years later, between the ages 25-30 (seemingly after his first battle against Frieza), Goku seemingly had another growth spurt, and became slightly more taller, and much more muscular, finally reaching his physical prime, and the appearance essentially remaining the same from there on.

Perhaps Goku's most distinguishing physical characteristic, both in real-world and in the series, is his spiky black hair that never changes throughout the franchise (except when in his various Super Saiyan forms), he has 4 spikes on the right, and 3 on the left side, with some hair strands between them (except in Super he had 5 spikes on the right, and 4 on the left side).

  • totoro

My Neighbor Totoro (Japanese: となりのトトロ? Hepburn: Tonari no Totoro) is a 1988 Japanese animated fantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and produced by Studio Ghibli. The film – which stars the voice actors Noriko Hidaka, Chika Sakamoto, and Hitoshi Takagi – tells the story of the two young daughters (Satsuki and Mei) of a professor and their interactions with friendly wood spirits in postwar rural Japan. The film won the Animage Anime Grand Prix prize and the Mainichi Film Award and Kinema Junpo Award for Best Film in 1988. It also received the Special Award at the Blue Ribbon Awards in the same year.

In 1989, Streamline Pictures produced an exclusive dub for use on transpacific flights by Japan Airlines. Troma Films, under their 50th St. Films banner, distributed the dub of the film co-produced by Jerry Beck. This dub was released on VHS and laserdisc in the United States by Fox Video in 1993 and on DVD in 2002. The rights to this dub expired in 2004 and so, was re-released by Walt Disney Home Entertainment on March 7, 2006[1] with a new dub cast. This version was also released in Australia by Madman on March 15, 2006.[2] and in the UK by Optimum Releasing on March 27, 2006. This DVD release is the first version of the film in the United States to include both Japanese and English language tracks, as Fox did not have the rights to the Japanese audio track for their version.

The movie and its titular character, Totoro, have become cultural icons. My Neighbor Totoro ranked 41st in Empire magazine's "The 100 Best Films Of World Cinema" in 2010,[3] and Totoro was ranked 18th on Empire's 50 Best Animated Film Characters list.[4] A list of the greatest animated films compiled by Terry Gilliam in Time Out ranked the film number 1.[5] A similar list compiled by the editors of Time Out ranked the film number 3.[6] The character made multiple cameo appearances in a number of Studio Ghibli films and video games and is recognized as one of the most popular characters in Japanese animation. Totoro was ranked 24th on IGN's top 25 anime characters.[7]
