    Course Description

In this course, students will find themselves reevaluating their present lifestyles through activities and assessments. Participants will learn about stressors in their lives and how “distress” can impact their health, work, attitude and productivity. Participants will gain knowledge and an appreciation for proper nutritional choices to feed the hungry brain and body. Together, we will explore stress management skills, healthy relationships, drugs, human diseases, and sexuality along with decision-making skills that may affect one's life. Furthermore, the class will offer vital lifesaving skills through Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

    Health Article Reflections (60 points)

On some Wednesdays you will be required to search for a health related article, thoroughly fill out an article analysis sheet, and write a one or two paragraph summary for class discussion (the article topic must be relative to the current health unit and will be presented on Friday). The article MUST BE from a newspaper, the Internet, or a health magazine. Each student must come to class prepared and ready to discuss their article and answer any questions. The analysis sheet (1), article (2), and written summary (3) must be attached (stapled or paper clipped) in the above order before turning it in or a 5-point deduction will be applied!

    Attendance Policy

Regular attendance is very important. For every unexcused absence, 10 points will be taken away from your participation grade. Ongoing, for every tardy, 5 points will be taken away from your participation grade.

Health Education Expectations to Abide By:

    1. You all have 42 minutes or less a day to spend with me. Do all your homework well (incomplete work will result in a zero credit because in life finishing is just as important as beginning), study, participate, listen in class, ask questions, follow the classroom expectations, and you will earn an “A.”

    2. It is an expectation that you show respect to your classmates at all times. Disrespectful behavior of any kind is not acceptable. Always treat people the way you want to be treated.

    3. Keep the noise level at a minimum. Teaching is my responsibility and learning is yours. Too much noise only hinders the learning process. “SHHHHH is for elementary students not high school students.”

    4. Adhere to all school rules. No food, candy, or drinks (water is okay) in the classroom. No cell phones, Ipods, or mp3 players. In life, laws and rules exist—some are reasonable and some aren't—however, they must be followed.

    5. It is vital to an effective learning environment that you remain in your seats unless instructed to do otherwise. If at any time you need to go anywhere, simply raise your hand and ask and for the most part your request will be granted.

    6. It is important to not interrupt when someone is speaking; so, please give your fellow classmates your undivided attention and raise your hand if you have a question or an opinion.

    7. Listening is just as important as talking therefore, when I or anyone else speaks, please refrain from talking. Listen, and then raise your hand if you have any questions.

    8. Never be afraid to ask questions. There is no such thing as a bad question.

    9. If there is an issue that you have with anyone or myself, see me after class and we'll handle it together with civility.

    10. Respect our classroom. Put all trash in the garbage to help alleviate the work load of our diligent custodial crew.

** Students have an opportunity to earn 200 points per marking period for participation/conduct expectations (100 for participation—100 for conduct). Inappropriate conduct and lack of participation WILL DEFINITELY have a negative affect on your final grade (but we don't have to worry about that)!

** Additional point deductions: unexcused tardy (–5), unexcused absence (–10), missing or incomplete assignments (–10)
